Clutch finally let go. Oh well. Looks like my only two street legal cars are now a 30 year old Miata and a 34 year old Cabriolet.
At what point do I just give up and park this car up or get rid of it? (Hint: it will never happen)

Snowflakes.
Won’t they fit on the Miata as well?

They sure will, but I’m not about to do that. ET35 and 14x6. Federal SS595s would be fitting for the car, but these snowflakes are pretty beat, I’ve been told NAs are much more sensitive to wheels being out of round.

Did the clutch, itself, fail? Or the clutch hydralics? Or cable (if it’s cable operated) or...?

Oh well. You were having it too good for too long, sayeth the Universe.

It was slippy a while back. I adjusted the cable and when I tried to leave this morning it was out. Couldn’t get in get when the car was on, when the car was off, go into gear, clutch out, start, car lurches forward. Either clutch is bad or TOB went out. Either way, I know the clutch was at a minimum close to failure.
VW 020 TOBs are cable operated. When the clutch is engaged (pedal “up”) the arm should be at about “9 o’clock” on the face of the transmission when you lift the arm with your hand until you can’t anymore. Mine was about 8:30, suggesting clutch failure.

Well, that green is just as pretty on a flatbed as on the road.

I want to eventually fix the rust and get the paint corrected or resprayed as eventually. I do like that green.

Looks like my first Golf, which I should have kept instead of buying a MkIV

That’s always a bad day when a tow truck is involved...

Yep. Normally the Universe reserves this comment for Saudis with Lamborghinis in London, but we’ve found the rare exception of bliss.

My Golf had 224k on the clock when it was totaled by a drunk , and I was still on the original clutch. God, I miss that car.

The world needs more green cars. My dad had a forest green Beetle when I was very little, then he had a bright green Karmann Ghia he nicknamed “The Pickle.” I really want a green car.

What’s the story of the 1st gen (US) GTI rims?

I love Mk3s. So far they’re my all time favorite car.

No story really. They came on the car when I bought it. The GL came with a 14” steelie with 185 section tires, previous owner had these laying around. 14” and they wear a 195. They’re pretty beat, but over three decades of road use will do that.

Mk3s are pretty much bottomed out in value. The cool stuff like GLXs, Silver Arrows, and Ginster Yellow cars are starting to go up in value. Mk4s still have so depreciation to do, so they aren’t being bought as beaters en masse quite yet.
You could definitely pick up a well maintained Mk4 that was close to what your car was for under 3k.

Probably still buying a bucket of somebody else’s problems. Despite what was wrong with my Mk4, I knew what the problems were, and I knew that I could still trust it. Of course, many of the problems were probably pretty normal. I really miss shifting gears, though.

There’s really only so many problems a Mk4 would have, especially a 2.0 one. But I get it.

Yeah, sounds like you’ll have a clutch replacement in your future...

Yeah, the very near future. It’s already stowed away with all the other cars. The only car I have on the street is the Miata, a car which was not suitable for street use until Saturday. We’ll see how this goes...

Sound
s like you need something supremely simple like a 50cc 2-stroke scooter to get around on (I forget if you live in the city) that would almost never go wrong and would be easy to store and get you places for when your menagerie is misbehaving :P

Way ahead of you. Unfortunately I live on the third floor and my apartment has no bike racks.

Sucks re: bike racks, but that thing is awesome! :D

Batavus Regency. It’s got the M48, so 30 mph is about all she’s got. I might try to trade it for a Tomos, since there’s not much market for speed bits like big pipes for this motor.
